“Rolling Stone” just named the best 200 country songs of all time . . . and any time a list like this is made, it’s sure to cause some drama.
They were celebrating the 10-year anniversary of launching “Rolling Stone Country”, a section devoted entirely to country music. In 2014, they put out an article with the best 100 country songs of all time.
So naturally for their 10-year they decided to double down and give us the best 200. And there were some shakeups from the previous list to now.
Here are the top ten:
1. “Jolene“ by Dolly Parton (1973). Dolly is the fairy godmother of country music . . . May she live forever. On the top-100 list in 2014, this song placed 9th. This just goes to show how her popularity only grows with time. Dolly for president.
2. “I Walk the Line“ by Johnny Cash (1956). What is more iconic than the Man in Black?
(Only Dolly apparently, because this song was #1 on the original list.)
3. “Crazy“ by Patsy Cline (1961).
4. “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry“ by Hank Williams (1949).
5. “He Stopped Loving Her Today“ by George Jones (1980).
6. “You Don’t Know Me“ by Ray Charles (1962).
7. “Standing on the Corner (Blue Yodel #9)“ by Jimmie Rodgers (1930).
8. “Stand by Your Man“ by Tammy Wynette (1968).
9. “Mama Tried“ by Merle Haggard (1968).
10. “Amarillo by Morning“ by George Strait (1982).
Well, they definitely have all the classics covered.
The highest contemporary song on the list, is none other than Taylor Swift at #20 with “Mean” (2010).
That means Taylor has a song that beats out every Garth Brooks song, every Chris Stapleton song, and every Willie Nelson song. Plus, it ranks higher than “The Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash at #25.
Cool list.
