Good morning, it's Tuesday, February 10. Minus 5 degrees in New Market Aurora. Dollar trading at 73.76 cents U.S. Gasoline at 131.9. I'm Daniel Coulombe. Canada's rental market cooled again in January, with asking rents down 2% year over year to just over $2,000, the lowest in more than two years. Analysts say more supply is finally easing pressure, with the average rent-to-income ratio dipping below 30% for the first time since 2020. Prices are still higher than pre-pandemic levels, but drops were seen across most provinces, including big declines in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. Toronto City Council digs into Mayor Olivia Chow's 2026 budget today, and the headline is a modest 2.2% property tax bump, the smallest of her term. Chow says new revenue from luxury buyers and speculators is helping keep taxes down while boosting funding for the TTC and police. Critics call it a pre-election move and warn the city is leaning too hard on reserve funds to cover a billion-dollar shortfall. Toronto's police chief now wants all seven officers charged in a major corruption probe suspended without pay. It follows Project S, an investigation alleging bribes, leaked intel, and ties to organized crime. Ontario's Inspector General has launched a province-wide review of all 45 police forces to examine how corruption is detected and prevented. The probe is ongoing, could lead to more charges. President Trump is now threatening to block the opening of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge. He posted that Canada is not treating the U.S. with fairness and respect, pointing to booze rules in Ontario, dairy tariffs and complaints about Prime Minister Mark Carney. The bridge is Canadian financed and nearly ready. Michigan's governor says it's opening one way or another. Hot country sports. Day 4, Milano-Cortina. Mikhail Kingsbury kicks off moguls. Short track hands out its first medal in the mixed relay. Canada hits the ice against the American at 2.10 Eastern this afternoon. Hot country weather, cloudy, a chance of flurries, high zero today. Becoming partly cloudy late this afternoon, a chance of flurries overnight, low minus 3. Wednesday clouds, chance of flurries, high zero. Thursday cloudy, high minus 2. Right now, minus 5 degrees in Newmarket, Aurora. I'm Daniel Coulombe in the Hot Country News Center.
